Medication is essential in the treatment of ADD as it can control the ADD sufferers behavior, particularly hyperactivity, but majority of therapists agree that ADD/ADHD counseling might be a better option. This is because medication alone, while addressing the physical manifestations of hypersensitivity or lack of focus, cannot address the profound mental and psychological aspects of guilt, shattered ego and self-esteem.

Counseling allows the ADD/ADHD sufferer to air out or release his feelings, bare his guilt to others, seek clarifications from experts or maybe other sufferers, all to gain a different perspective. ADD/ADHD counseling may come from an individual or from a group. Children, teens, or even adults with attention deficit disorder may seek or be provided with counseling by his doctor or psychiatrist, therapist, even the parish priest. These people can provide expert advice that will help the sufferer understand the ADD condition more, paving the way to acceptance and resolve to rise above the problems brought about by the ailment. While doctors and therapists reinforce a medical understanding of the condition, a priest or family friend may explain the condition and clarify actions by taking off from a more personal, social, or spiritual perspective.

Group counseling may best be provided by the childs family. The parents and the siblings can provide the psychological support to ensure the child that he/she is special, not criminal or disabled, but afflicted with an ailment that can be treated with care, understanding, and support. The family, separately or as one, can counsel in the most natural and comfortable setting of the home. The father and mother can provide a different set of advises compared to the brothers and sisters, but altogether will reinforce the childs belief not only in himself, but in the people around him. Also, peer groups - a circle of close friends or classmates - can also provide support. These peers will understand the sufferer no matter what, and with such unconditional acceptance from a group, the child can also learn to accept his circumstances.

ADD ADHD counseling will work more wonders than merely physically relaxing the child with medication. The effects of counseling are more profound and far-reaching.
